WhatsApp Verification Code Not Arriving? What to Check

WhatsApp code not coming by SMS? Check the number format, wait out the timer, try a call, and rule out a number WhatsApp won't verify, then pick a private one.

WhatsApp Verification Code Not Arriving? What to Check

WhatsApp asks for a six-digit code to register a number, and sometimes the SMS just doesn't come. The same steps apply to WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business: they register numbers the same way. Work through them in order.

1. Check the number on the confirmation screen

WhatsApp shows the number it is about to verify. Make sure that:

  • the country is the one the number belongs to, and the number after the country code

has no leading 0;

  • no digit is missing or doubled.

If it's wrong, tap "Wrong number?" and enter it again. The country code lookup shows how numbers are written in each country.

2. Wait for the timer and try the other method

The app shows a countdown before you can ask again. Requesting codes repeatedly can lock you out for longer, so wait it out. When it ends, you get other options such as a voice call that reads the code aloud. A number that can take calls often gets through this way when the SMS didn't.

3. Make sure the phone can receive the SMS

If you're verifying the SIM in the same phone: signal on, airplane mode off, and no app blocking messages from unknown senders. If the number is somewhere else (a second phone, a virtual number), the code arrives there, not on the phone running the app.

4. A two-step PIN or another device

If the number was used on WhatsApp before and had two-step verification, WhatsApp asks for that six-digit PIN after the code. That is not the SMS code; without the PIN you wait for the reset period WhatsApp shows.

5. Rule out the number itself

WhatsApp decides which numbers it verifies. It often refuses:

  • free, shared numbers from receive-SMS sites, already used by many people;
  • numbers it treats as VoIP;
  • numbers it has banned, in which case the app says so.

When the number is the problem

Change the number, not the phone. A private virtual number is rented to one person for 28 days, so its codes go to you alone and you can verify again later on the same number. WhatsApp makes the final call, so check that a number works before you rely on it: how to check a number. More in virtual phone number for WhatsApp.

FAQ

Is the WhatsApp Business code different?

No. WhatsApp Business verifies a number the same way, with the same SMS or call.

Why does WhatsApp offer a call instead of an SMS?

It's a second route for the same code. If your number can receive calls, use it.

Can I get a refund if a number doesn't receive the WhatsApp code?

A number is final and non-refundable once issued; refunds cover only unused balance or a verified technical fault on our side. Check the number first.
