Google Verification Code Not Arriving? Fixes That Work
Google sends a code by SMS when you create a Gmail account, add a phone or sign in from a new device. If it doesn't come, or Google refuses the number outright, go through these checks.
1. "This phone number cannot be used for verification"
This message means Google won't send a code to that number at all, so waiting won't help. Google shows it for numbers it has seen used too often (shared and free numbers are the usual case), for numbers it treats as VoIP, and sometimes for a burst of attempts from one device or network. Try a different number, or come back later from your usual device.
2. Wait before asking again
Each new request can cancel the previous code, and too many requests lead Google to pause codes to that number. Ask once, wait, and use only the newest code.
3. Try a voice call
On many screens Google offers "Call" instead of a text. A number that takes calls often gets the code this way when the SMS didn't arrive.
4. Check the number and the phone
- Country code first, no leading 0 after it; the
country code lookup shows each country's format.
- If the number is in the same phone: signal on, no blocking of short or unknown senders.
- If the number is elsewhere (a second SIM, a virtual number), the code arrives there.
5. Recovery and 2-Step Verification
If you're locked out and the code goes to an old number you no longer have, use "Try another way" on the sign-in screen: Google offers the options you set up earlier, such as a backup email or a prompt on a signed-in device.
When the number is the problem
If Google rejects the number or never texts it, change the number. A private virtual number is rented to one person for 28 days, so its codes go only to you. Google makes the final call on every number, so check one before you rely on it: how to check a number. The steps are in virtual phone number for Gmail and Google.
FAQ
Does Google accept virtual numbers?
It accepts some and rejects others; it decides per number. Free shared numbers are the ones it rejects most.
Will a number I used once work for recovery later?
Only if you still have it. A private number stays yours while you keep renewing it, every 28 days.
Can I get a refund if a number doesn't receive the Google code?
A number is final and non-refundable once issued; refunds cover only unused balance or a verified technical fault on our side.
